At NIAAA, we recognize the vital roles that both grandparents raising grandchildren and family caregivers play. In Northwestern Illinois, over 4,500 grandparents are raising their grandchildren due to various circumstances such as parental death, illness, incarceration, divorce, or neglect.

Available Services
Education and Training
Participate in workshops, conferences, and educational programs designed to equip you with essential caregiving skills. These programs address both the emotional and practical aspects of caregiving.
Temporary Respite Care
Take advantage of respite care services to get a break when needed. Grandparents raising grandchildren can access licensed childcare services, while caregivers of older adults can receive support through homemaker services, adult day care, or short-term nursing home placement.
When you come in for your respite care interview, please have 2-3 provider agency options prepared.
Support Groups
Connect with others through our support groups tailored for grandparents and family caregivers. Share experiences and learn coping strategies in a supportive environment.
There is no charge for support groups, and grandparents of any age can attend.
Legal Services
Grandparents raising grandchildren often face legal issues related to guardianship and custody. Free legal assistance is available for navigating these matters and for caregivers needing support with civil issues.
Emergency Assistance
In urgent situations, we provide emergency assistance for essential needs such as medical supplies, transportation, and minor home repairs, offering a safety net for both grandparents and caregivers.
